Cat Ba island tour in Vietnam: kayaking, swimming and a fishing trip that was not what it seemed
After the mountains of northern Vietnam I ended up on Cat Ba island, among limestone islands, kayaks and a fisherman who was not a fisherman.
The island tour
I booked a one-day island tour for the next morning at a travel agency. On the boat I met a German traveller and we explored together. Lunch was served on the boat, followed by an hour of rest.
Deep-water solo climbing
The limestone mountains of Cat Ba are known for deep-water solo climbing. Climbers go many metres up without a rope, and if they fall, they land in the water. It is one of the best places in the world for it, but only for experienced climbers with local guides.
Swimming and kayaking
We swam in a quiet bay and then moved to another place for kayaking. The staff gave basic instructions and warned us not to leave the kayak. We parked the kayak near one of the islands and explored a bit. Follow your guide and wear a life jacket.
A lost T-shirt
Back at the hotel I realised I had left my favourite T-shirt at the site of a mishap. I called the guide, who promised to bring it back the next day. Keep the number of your tour guide.
The fisherman who was a salesman
At the night market a man invited me on a fishing trip. He was not a real fisherman but a middleman who took us to the real fisherman. On the boat we got only fishing lines and no rods. I caught a small fish, but the experience was not what I expected. Ask what is included and agree on price first.
