Climbing Mount Fuji: four hours to the summit and how a lost wallet came home
I reached the summit of Mount Fuji in about four hours, broke into a run in places and then lost my wallet. This is the story and what I would tell another hiker.
The climb
The path climbs over rocks and lava, in colours of black, orange and red. The climb usually takes longer than mine, and I even ran in places, so I do not recommend this pace to anyone who is not acclimatised. Start early, drink water and take breaks.
On the summit
At the top I felt proud and drained. I lay down on the edge of the crater and slept a few minutes before the descent. Weather on the summit changes quickly, so carry warm layers even in summer.
The lost wallet
When I tried to buy a bus ticket I realised the wallet was gone. A hiker had found it. With the help of a kind stranger we contacted him and he agreed to hand it over in a nearby city. The last bus was about to leave, and a lady at the information centre paid for my ticket. At the police station I got the wallet back and was welcomed with snacks.
What I would do differently
Keep your wallet in a zipped pocket, carry a second card and keep some cash separately. Check bus times before you start so you do not rely on strangers.
A night at a temple
After Fuji I stayed one night at a Buddhist temple. The monk meditated with me and gave me a drawing. Ask politely, follow the house rules and leave a donation.
Practical tips
The official climbing season is in summer, so check dates and hut reservations before you travel. Wear layers and sturdy shoes, take a headlamp and plenty of water, and respect altitude.
