Bali with local fishermen: dolphins at sunrise, baby tuna and a one-dollar hot spring
In northern Bali the best experiences were not on a list. They were offers from fishermen: come to see dolphins, come fishing, come for breakfast.
Dolphins before sunrise
I booked a dolphin trip with a local fisherman for 5 am. We spent about two hours on the ocean, and then dolphins appeared out of nowhere, jumping around the boat. The sunrise over the sea was worth the early start. Ask your host to recommend an honest boat, and agree on the price before you go.
Fishing for baby tuna
Another fisherman named Tiger offered to take me fishing at 4:30 am. We went out on a small catamaran, watched the sunrise and caught baby tuna. Back on land he invited me for breakfast that he called “babrkey”: a translator app showed it meant barbecue. We grilled the tuna and drank palm water.
A hot spring for one dollar
I travelled around the island to a hot spring in the west-north. The entrance cost one dollar, while a similar experience near the main tourist areas cost about fifty. The spring was quiet, with no crowds. Local ticket sellers can be creative, so confirm the price before you pay.
How to meet locals
Stay in local villages instead of resort areas. Eat in warungs, ask questions and accept invitations that feel safe. A translator app helps with words like barbecue.
Safety and respect
Boats can be small and old, so check life jackets. Respect sacred places: a friend who lived in the village taught me to ask for an invitation, even silently, when entering a new place.
