Ko Phangan: how I stayed three weeks and what a day looked like
I planned a few days on Ko Phangan and stayed three weeks. It is the island I returned to most often, and it feels like home.
Finding a place
On my second day in Thailand I rented a bike and booked an Airbnb in a quiet area with a sea view. The host showed me around, which saved days of searching.
A typical day
Wake up in a house with a sea view, eat a coconut and fruit, hit the gym, sauna and ice bath, join a workshop and spend the afternoon with people on the beach. Evenings are for dancing, singing or just sitting by the sea.
The low tide
At low tide you can walk up to two kilometres from the coast with water below your knees. Check tide times, and watch your path back when the water returns.
The island dogs
The island is full of friendly dogs. One of them jumped onto my scooter after a night out and expected a ride, so I took him one kilometre and returned him. A neighbour’s puppy waited for me every day for a hug.
The Full Moon Party
The monthly Full Moon Party draws huge crowds. I went once, and it was not for me. If you want quiet, avoid the party beach on those nights.
Beyond the beach
I visited Buddhist temples, tried durian and unique ice cream made from black beans. Movement and dance workshops introduced me to people from all over the world.
Visa and leaving
My visa was running out, so I left by ferry to Surat Thani and continued towards Malaysia. If you fall in love with the island, plan visa extensions early.
