Langtang Valley: two trips, one 4,500 m summit and what I would do differently

Langtang is a valley north of Kathmandu beneath 7,000 m peaks. I went twice. The first time I turned back after five days of illness, the second time I reached 4,500 m.

Why Langtang

After my Everest flight was cancelled, I looked for another trek close to Kathmandu. Langtang fits: it starts only a day’s bus ride from the capital, and it passes through forests, waterfalls and mountain villages before it opens into high valleys.

Getting there from Kathmandu

The usual starting point is the village of Syabru Besi. From Kathmandu I took a local bus, which took about seven hours on rough roads. Buy your ticket at the bus park, ask several people for the right bus and plan to arrive early. Trekking areas have entry and permit fees, so carry cash and ask your guesthouse what you need.

How long it takes

I planned about 12 days for the valley, aiming at peaks of around 5,000 m. Add buffer days for weather or illness. Altitude gain is quick, and descending is hard on tired legs.

Best time to go

The most popular seasons are October to November and March to April, when skies are usually clearer. Check conditions before you go.

What went wrong on my first trip

I started with stomach problems from a roadside meal. I climbed anyway, and by the Red Panda Hotel I was too weak to continue. The family running the guesthouse took care of me with hot tea, and I stayed five days before turning back. The lesson is simple: if you are ill, rest low, do not push higher, and get proper medical advice.

What worked on my second trip

In 2024 I returned to Langtang and reached a summit of about 4,500 m. Better preparation, more rest days and starting healthy made the difference.

Packing notes

Warm layers and a sleeping bag rated for freezing nights, a water filter, a basic first aid kit, cash for teahouses, and a power bank. Tea houses sell dal bhat and rice dishes, which are cheap and reliable.
