Mount Batur sunrise hike in Bali: timing, guides, crowds and flies
Mount Batur is Bali’s most popular sunrise hike. It is an easy climb, but the crowds, the guide rules and the flies are things nobody tells you about.
Where to stay
I rented a bungalow in a local village near Batur, with beautiful views and cool weather. The area grows vegetables fertilised with cow manure, which means millions of flies. Keep food covered and ask your host about the season.
The 4 am start
We woke at 4 am and walked to the entrance. Hundreds of cars were picking up tourists and the air smelled of petrol. At the ticket point we were told a guide was required. Rules for guides on Mount Batur are enforced locally and can change, so ask at the entrance and respect the decision.
The climb
The climb is easy for people used to hiking. We were at the top by about 6 am, roughly twice as fast as most groups. Bring a headlamp, a warm layer and water, because it is cold and windy at the summit before sunrise.
Sunrise as business
After the sunrise, the tourists left in groups, and we had the mountain to ourselves. The sunrise has become a business, with guides serving breakfast eggs boiled in volcanic steam. Stay a bit longer to enjoy the quiet.
A rat and an egg
While we ate eggs, a small rat came to see what we had. We played with her and gave her a whole egg. She picked it up and disappeared into the bushes. Do not feed wildlife on purpose, but it was a nice memory.
Tips
Go in the dry season, book a guide if required, wear shoes with grip and carry your rubbish down. Check the weather: clouds can hide the sunrise.
